Catalytic Converters
Catalytic Converters (cats) are fitted to vehicle’s exhaust system and resemble a small muffler. Their outer body is stainless steel, while inside is a honeycombed ceramic / metal block containing a variety of metals such as Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium. These metals cause a chemical reaction with the passing exhaust gases, this reduces harmful exhaust gases and converts them into less harmful gases.
Catalytic converters are an integral part of a vehicle’s emission control system and they should not be removed or tampered with. The cats we use in our exhaust systems are 200 cell metallic Hi Flow units. Contrary to popular belief, 200 cell catalytic converters do not hinder the overall performance of the vehicle in any way. Being a responsible Australian manufacturer we pride ourselves on meeting, and exceeding the standard emissions requirements put in place by the Australian government. Our turbo back exhaust systems remove your standard 400 cell catalytic converter and replace it with a 200 cell, diesel specific metallic catalytic converter - this is welded into our exhaust systems to keep you compliant.
Diesel Particulate Filters ( DPF )
Modern 4x4's have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in the factory exhaust system. A DPF filters harmful carbon particulates produced in the combustion cycle & prevents these particles from being released into the atmosphere.
First fitted to diesel vehicles from 2007, the DPF has been causing confusion and, in many cases, expensive repair bills for drivers, due to lack of knowledge about the system. The filter is designed to deliver an 80% reduction in diesel particulate and soot emissions and does this by trapping the particles in the filter itself.
The engine control unit (ECU) monitors the saturation level inside the filter, and when it reaches a certain percentage, increases the temperature inside the exhaust to ‘burn off’ the particles. this is called a regeneration.
It is illegal to remove a DPF from an exhaust system, doing so can lead to fines being imposed on the vehicles owner & the person actually removing the filter. We recommend doing a DPF Back system on these vehicles.
